Breast Mastectomy with Implant Use

Mastectomy with implant use is a surgical procedure aimed at removing the breast, most commonly due to a diagnosis of breast cancer or as a preventive measure for women at high risk of developing the disease. After mastectomy, breast reconstruction is often performed using implants, which helps restore a natural appearance to the chest. Implants can be placed under the skin and muscle tissue, depending on the individual anatomy of the patient and the extent of the surgery.

Reconstruction can be performed immediately during the same operation or at a later date after the completion of oncological treatment. This process involves filling the void left by the mastectomy with a silicone or saline implant, helping the patient regain confidence and psychological comfort. The choice of the appropriate size and type of implant is discussed with the surgeon, taking into account the patient’s preferences and anatomy.

The mastectomy procedure with an implant carries certain risks, such as infections, scarring, or potential complications associated with the implant itself. In some cases, additional corrective surgery may be necessary.

Post-Procedure Recommendations

Up to about 1 week after the procedure

  • Swelling or bruising in the upper abdomen may occur. This is a result of the swelling moving from the breast area to lower regions due to gravity. This is a temporary symptom and usually subsides after about a week.

After about 1 week post-surgery

  • You may perform breast exercises if recommended.

Up to about 2 weeks after the procedure
You should:

  • Keep your arms from the shoulder to the elbow along your body as much as possible. You can raise your arm to shoulder level.
  • Wear a special dressing and compression bra, which will be removed after about 1-2 weeks.
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects as well as reaching upwards and backwards.

Up to about 1 month after the procedure
You may:

  • Take a shower, but be careful not to wet the operated area.
  • Experience tenderness in the breast area after the procedure. The frequency and intensity of the discomfort will gradually decrease each day.
  • Feel more tenderness in one breast than the other; this does not mean anything is wrong.

It is recommended to:

  • Sleep with your head elevated and place pillows under your arms to reduce muscle tension, allowing for a more comfortable night’s rest.
  • Avoid sleeping on your side.
  • Wear front or back-buttoned clothing.

Avoid:

  • Clothing that is put on over the head.
  • Taking pain medication on an empty stomach, as this may lead to vomiting.

About 1 month after the procedure

  • You can return to most activities.
  • It is recommended to use Cicaplast ointment on scars (for at least three months). This will help reduce scars. A UV filter cream is also recommended to avoid pigmentation changes. It should also be noted that swimsuits do not provide sufficient sun protection. All creams should be applied in a thin layer.

For about 2 months after the procedure
You should:

  • Wear a special bra.
  • Completely avoid the sun and tanning beds.
  • Sleep on your back or side to avoid pressure on the breasts.
  • There is a strict ban on physical work and exertion.

After about 2 months post-surgery
You may:

  • Resume more strenuous exercises such as lifting heavy objects, golf, tennis, swimming, running, etc., but only if your body can handle it.
  • Still experience sensory disturbances in the lower part of the breast. This symptom will diminish over time, typically within a few months.
